Well all sounds correct. Bat term to amp meter term that is not connected to the battery through the starter big terminal. F terminal to the Field (small) terminal on the gen. Gen terminal to the generator armature terminal (big) And the L terminal either not connected, or connected to the light switch input. Check the actual voltage across the battery when running at 1/2 throttle. It should read 7 volts + or - .2 volts. If it is, and it stays there if you turn on the lights, you are good to go. If it is less, 6.5 or so, then while running at 1/2 throttle jumper the field terminal on the generator to ground and then check the volts. If at 7 or more, the new VR is not operating correctly. and a replacement is needed. Many electrical components are difficult to return. Many are returned reboxed and sent out as new. Argue the point that you know how to do this, and it was not working from the getgo. Good luck, JimN
