I thought I could always figure out why a tractor will not start, but I am stumped on this one. My Farmall A that I use for mowing my lawn with a 60" Woods finish mower decided that it at random will not start. Once it did it cold in the shed, but mainly it has happened when I have been mowing, shut it off for about 1/2 hr and then it will not start. It just spins over with no fire at all. I even cranked it with the same result. It has a magneto. I checked the spark and it has good spark and it only sparks on the correct cylinder. It seems like it is not getting gas, but I took the drain plug out of the carb and gas ran out like it was at the correct level. I need to point out that when it runs, it runs really good even under heavy load with thick grass. After cranking it over today for several times without it starting, I pulled a spark plug and it was dry. I finally squirted some gas in one of the cylinders and it finally started. What could be causing it to not get gas intermittently when I start it and after it is running it runs fine or most of the time it starts on the first cylinder. Roger

Today's Featured Article - Oil Bath Air Filters - by Chris Pratt. Some of us grew up thinking that an air filter was a paper thing that allowed air to pass while trapping dirt particles of a particles of a certain size. What a surprise to open up your first old tractor's air filter case and find a can that appears to be filled with the scrap metal swept from around a machine shop metal lathe. To top that off, you have a cup with oil in it ("why would you want to lubricate your carburetor?"). On closer examination (and some reading in a AC D-14 service manual), I found out that this is a pretty ingenious method of cleaning the air in the tractor's intake tract.
