Back in the 40s when F-12s were popular, "they" said it wasn't a good idea to run with the pulley on all the time, because it could be rough on the shaft bearing. You know about "they"--rumors that get around, and we never knew where they came from. Anyhow, there might be some wisdom in that. As far as the crack goes, that's a heavy pulley and I'd expect a fair amount of centrifugal force. I'd hate to be anywhere nearby, or even on the seat, if any part of the thing flew off. Never had the problem, so I'd go with the advice of the fellows here who have.
