Ed: You mentioned this noise in your recent e mail, now it's process of elimination. Is what your finding the same in all gears? When you say shaft is not turning at all, which shaft, you've lost me? As you jacked each rear wheel, did you notice any movement of axle in relation to final drive housing? That would indicate axle bearing problems. With tractor out of gear and rear wheels jacked, do you hear any noise as you turn wheels, if so which wheel? Gears breaking up within final drives usually result in breaking cast final drive housing or poking a hole in the sump pan.
My next move would be anchor tractor solidly with rear wheels jacked, preferably outside. Hitch it drawbar to drawbar with another vehicle so it can't vibrate off jacks. Have it on 6x6 blocking would be better. Start the tractor and run it in 1st gear, then get out the old broom handle, and with ear at one end, place broom handle at various places on cast drive line until you zero in on where noise is coming from. Try it with one wheel brake allpied, then the other. Possibly try reverse or higher forward gears. Especially on cast the broom handle should pin point exactly where the noise is.
As I see it this noise is the source of the problem, and it could be anywhere from final drive through to clutch disc. Could be center broke out of clutch disc, it might be catching enough to move empty tractor. Could be in transmission, differential or final drives. I'm sure you will find the problem with the broom handle, or if you feel so inclined go to an auto parts store and buy one of those mechanic stethescopes.
