Just out of curiosity, are you getting 13.1 volts steady to the battery terminals when the tractor is running?
I've used WalMart batteries before, never had that kind of problem on my tractors. However, I have a neighbor who owns a 350 converted to alternator, and can't keep a battery working in it. Turns out the alternator regulator is shot, and the voltage would fluctuate, badly enough that it's what probably damaged the battery.
If a digital volt ohm meter shows problems (anything other than 13 volts steady) at the battery when the tractor is running, then I'd try opening the alternator and replace the regulator. If its a Delco, you can get a rebuild kit at any auto supply store.
