Banjo: If he's using a 48" tiller, he is not going cover tracks anyhow. I suspect he's planning to work from center out, with tiller offset, keeping the opposite wheel on the untilled soil.
Personally I'm not a very big fan of tillers, just an expensive way to till the soil. I've been growing garden vegetables and flowers, some years up to 20 acres, for over 45 years, never owned a tiller yet. I used to plow quite a few gardens for folks. One didn't need to see the tiller to know he was using one, the soil was a lot like concrete. I had one guy ask me why nothing would grow in his garden. I told him why nothing would grow, by asking him how much vegetation grew up through his concrete patio and garage floor. I went there with 130, moldboard plow, disk and s-tine cultivator. Hardest plowing I ever did, lifetime. He had that soil pulverized as fine as concrete, and believe me, it was set up almost as hard. I plowed, disked and cultivated it until I had a foot of loose plantable soil. As I loaded up my equipment, there he was, out there with his cement maker, happy as if he was all there.
