Just a suggestion - If the power came in through the top (as it ordinarily would to the PTO) then by gear drive to a lay shaft (which in this case you see as having the PTO sticking out the rear) and then that layshaft drives the lower shaft (which would have a pinion on to drive the crown gear) via another gear set. According to my parts book the reduction for the PTO is almost the same as the reduction for 1st gear. If this box used two sets of PTO gears it would be something like a double reduction. Also for those who are more skilled with computers there appears to be some writing arranged around the PTO shaft in a semicircle (beginning with BAY?), can this be blow up or clarified? tractorsam
