I don't have a Super A, but on my Super C, there is a small pipe plug on the right rear of the transaxle housing that allows you to check the oil level. When oil runs out, you have enough.
On the topic of manuals, they all have strong points and some weak spots. The IH Service Manual will be more complete, but they still expect you to be familar with these tractors. I&T manuals can give a little more coverage on the transmision, but they do rely on the 'results being intuitively obvious to the casual observer'. A parts book is a good resource for seeing how (and what are ) all the little bits go together. It also makes ordering parts much easier. The Operators Manual covers where everything is and what you need to do to mantain the tractor. Between all of them and a little advice here, you can usually figure out how to fix anything.
As far as the leak goes, you might need to take everything apart. If the problem is a bad bearing rather than just the seal, chances are other bearings may have been damaged too. The good news is that parts are available and the tractors were designed to be worked on and fixed.
