I think that the diferential in that tractor is living on borrowed time. This is particularly true if the hand clutch (more appropriately called live PTO clutch) has been disengaged at high idle for extended periods of time. When that lever is pulled and the tractor is in neutral, it causes the diferential to spin at two times its normal speed in 5th gear. What is worse is that the spider gears that normally move very slowly one way or the other are now racing. Work-arounds usually last only a short time before they destroy something else. Tell the owner to fix the tractor or deduct at least $500 dollars from a fair price for that tractor.
