It's been a while, but as I recall, there is a snap ring on the rear bearing of the top shaft that keeps things in place. The manual says you can remove that snap ring without removing something else that is in the way (can'r recall for sure, but I think it's the cross shaft for the brake pedals. However, I could not see how it was possible to get the snap ring off without removing that cross piece. You can barely see it. That snap ring has to come out before you can get the top shaft out. Also, the ends of the gear teeth are supposed to be rounded off to facilitate engagement. The internal teeth on the 4/5 sliding gear are the ones that are usually gone and those teeth are for 5th gear. When I was into this, I did not take out the bottom shaft, so can't help much on that.
