If it has a 4 terminal (BAT ARM FLD LOAD) Voltage Regulator, it NOT any LHBD light switch controls charge rate (maybe it was upgraded to VR). On a VR the gennys FLD post wires to the VR FLD terminal NOT up to the LHBD switch
If so it will have 4 wires to it PLUS its metal case/frame needs a good ground usualy via its mounting to the genny, but it may have had an extra REAL ground wire???.....IT MUST BE GROUNDED TO WORK
Also someone may have ran an extra wire to its BAT terminal to feed battery voltage to the switch instead of it getting voltage off the ammeter. Its really suppoed to get that off the L terminal but it may be wired wrong!!!!!
You gotta get it wired right for 4 terminal VR use (Scotty gave ya Bob's Wiring Link) and then Polarize the genny n then if it dont charge use Bob M's Troubleshootign Flow Chart or my procedures. My Troubleshooting also tells how to wire a 4 terminal VR
