If the igntion is running off a magneto, it won't make a whit of difference what voltage or polarity you're using to run the starter and any lights.
There is one oddball exception, but easily detected with a quick look. I hate to even bring it up, what with the risk of adding confusion to the issue. There are a few fixes out there, when the spark-generating part of the mag would give out, and time or other considerations led them to a solution where they used only the distributor end of the mag, and wired an external, battery-supplied ignition coil outside the mag, so that the points and condenser in the magneto would trigger the coil to supply the spark -- in effect, completely abandoning the magneto part of the whole assembly.
So . . . if the wire (commonly called the coil wire) that sits in the center tower of your distributor cap runs only to the tower on the rear of the domed rectangular cap on the top of the magneto assembly, then your spark IS coming from the magneto and you can proceed with your 12v conversion with no worries about or changes to your ignition.
If that wire runs from the center of the cap to an external, old-style canister-type automotive coil that is mounted somewhere nearby but outside the mag body, then the boys at the parts counter may be onto something.
Another way to look at it (literally) is if the only wires connected to the magneto are the plug and coil wires, and the wire to the kill switch to ground it for stopping the motor, then you're running off your mag. If there is an external coil mounted thereabouts and you see a small wire (other than the one on the side of the mag that runs to your kill switch) that kind of snakes its way from an external coil into the magneto, then you might suspect that it's one of those oddball conversions I speak of. Other than that, you're good to go.
Going back to yout original question, it was really about (as someone else pointed out) battery or magneto ignition, not "start". Starting? There are two choices -- battery-powered starter motor, or a hand crank. Ignition? MAgneto or battery.

Today's Featured Article - When Push Comes to Shove - by Dave Patterson. When I was a “kid” (still am to a deree) about two I guess, my parents couldn’t find me one day. They were horrified (we lived by the railroad), my mother thought the worst: "He’s been run over by a train, he’s gone forever!" Where did they find me? Perched up on the seat of the tractor. I’d probably plowed about 3000 acres (in my head anyway) by the time they found me. This is where my love for tractors started and has only gotten worse in my tender 50 yrs on this “green planet”. I’m par
