With the dropping resistor you are dropping the 12 volts to 6. Many or most 6 volts systems use a ballast resistor to drop the running voltage to the coil to approximately 4 volts to give longer life to the points. Sure, you do not have to do this but it will prolong the life of the components. This could be accomplished with one resistor but the resistor is not readily available where dropping resistors and ballast resistor are. All coils do not have an internal resistor. Many vehicles made during the 60's and 70's have an external ballast resistor. Only in more recent years have the resistors been built in to the coil.
