George: I didn't pull the rod caps off, however I did inspect the cylinder walls...no scoring or indications the piston is moving abnormally. There is slight lateral movement in the piston rods at the crankshaft, althouth there is no roof for any twist. I'm sure the bearings are worn, but I don't see enough play to make the knock I'm hearing. Oil pressure is good also. I put the pan back on and ran around the yard for a while. The knock seems to dissapear (perhaps lessen considerably) when the engine is under strain or under high vaccuum. It's most pronounced when simply "running" at higher rpm. I'm going to take another look at the valve clearance. I need to get a .013 guage with an offset so I can get it down into the access opening.
