Jack, From your description of the noise, any answer would be strictly a wild guess in the dark. "Hammering?" could be bad bearing or broken teeth or other problems. The "gears rubbing" sound could just be worn gears. Also check and see if the noice is more pronounced under acceleration/load, or when you let off the throttle on the road and the gears are backlashing. Find somebody famalier with spur gear tractor transmissions and let him listen to it. It may be something yet it may just be normal noise like the present owner says. You might also drive other older tractors to see if they sound simular to you. Harold H
