What's that noise?

I test drove a 1954 Super A the other day that I am considering trading for. I'm still new at this tractor thing so I need some help. The tractor shifted in every gear smoothly but there was a noies comming from under the shift lever handle that sounded like a hammering or gears rubbing each other. This sound was cintinuous even in motion. The owner said it was normal and not to be worried. Should I be?
