Red Rookie, I'm sorry but I don't follow where you are describing. On the engine side, behind the flywheel, will be a retainer that the rear main fits in(its tough to see as the flywheel pretty much covers it up). On the trans. side, behind the throwout bearing assembly, will be a 4-6" circular cover that covers the PTO gear; around that will be a 10-12" circular cover that covers the front part of the TA, if equipped, or the countershaft drive gear if there is no TA. There are no gaskets here, just O-rings & lip seals. Also, there is a smaller 4-bolt round cover at the bottom of the trans. housing that covers the transmission countershaft. It is also an O-ring. Hope this helps.
