It was a cold, drizzly day when I pulled into d282s driveway...Well, it really was but there is no need to go back to this summer.
The highlights:
- Head has been done since Sept.
- 12 injectors are back with 4 good ones.
- Bought a spare injection pump, straight RUSTY fenders, and ??? from a local junkyard.
- Cyls 1 and 4 were pretty pitted and bearings were pretty worn. Found a parts motor somewhat close.
- Bought a parts motor from way up north.
- Began disassembly of parts motor about 1 month ago.
That brings us up to a week ago. I finally got time to take the parts motor apart all the way. I pulled the crank and pushed the pistons out the bottom. Two required a little love from a mall and block of wood. The other two pulled out by hand. The two that needed help were #1 and #4. Is it a trend in the 9 series??? The #1 piston is a little rusty on the top, but better than my #1/#4. It doesn't matter I now have 6 to make a good set of 4.
The issue (and why I have been too mad to post an update) is I broke the bottoms of EVERY sleeve in the motor during disassembly. I was working from a pallet because I don't own an engine stand that I trust with a diesel 9 series motor (and all the mounts can't handle the 5/8" bolts that I would need to use) From the looks of things I smacked the rods off the sleeves at some point in time and it broke them out.
The upside is I got another parts motor from the local scrapyard out of a TD-9. In talking with the guy who took it there it has been rebuilt in the last 30 years. Hopefully it was rebuilt with 4.5" pistons and I won't have to worry about getting 2 good sleeves out of it. He said it spun a bearing and has sat for a long time. I tried to turn it over and it didn't spin, but I didn't use a very big wrench. This one came with the head and everything so I have to pull the head off to see what I have. To make things worse I had a buyer for 2 sleeves. He has a 650 D and needed 1 good sleeve. He was just going to punch out one of my 4.4" sleeves. The other downside is out of four motors I can't get one set of rod or main bearings that I want to use. One has big scratches and the other you can see brass(?) showing.
Just thought I would update you guys now that I cooled off enough to talk about it. I do have one question. After I get the other fender off what would you do before painting? The motor will be coming out to go to the shop.
