Have you checked the parts diagram to make sure all the parts are in there. The parts diagram shows a spacer on the countershaft between the back bearing and the 1st speed gear. If that spacer is missing I think you would have the problem you describe. Looking at the parts diagram, it looks like that spacer may be hidden inside the oiler gear. Anyway, a spacer there would push the pinion gear back.
