I have been trying to resolve a charging problem on my 51H for over a year. Here are the steps I have taken so far. 1. I installed a new VR which I purchased from this site. It charged for a little while and then quit charging and the ammeter then showed discharge when running. 2. I took the VR and the generator to a generator shop and they checked it out. The genny is OK. The VR had a very fine wire which was no longer connected to its terminal point on one end. The shop felt this was the problem. 3. I checked all wiring and had a friend double check it. The wiring is exactly as shown in the parts manual. 4. I bought another VR from this site and installed it. At the suggestion of the generator shop guy, I also ran a wire from the ground post of the VR to the genny housing. The ammeter showed charge, so I thought the problem was resolved. After a few hours of running, it quit charging again. I opened the VR and this time the wire that had come off on the first unit was intact but the VR still will not control the charging circuit and the ammeter again shows discharge when running. 5. Although the genny shows good on bench test, it is a unit off of an M. Could it be too strong for the H VR, etc. 6. I have a distributor/coil setup and a 3-position light switch (O,B,D). It is a 6 volt positive ground system.
Can anybody help me resolve this perplexing problem? I am out of ideas.

I've already drilled the center of the bolt out with about 7/64" drill bit the entire length of the bolt. Only one end of the bolt is visible. I tried to use an easy out but it wasn't budging and I didn't want t
