H Generator Help

I have a 43 H that was converted some time ago from magneto to battery ignition. It has a 6 volt battery and generator with a delco-remy 'thing' attached to it (about 1/2 the size of a regulator with two terminals - one generator wire goes 'thru' this thing to the ungrounded post, the other generator wire is grounded with this thing). I dont see a standard regulator. It seems to charge ok, but its grounded to Neg and the ammeter works backwards. I would like to flip the battery terminals (to positive ground) but am not sure if I need to flip anything else, like the starter or the generator terminals. I'm also wondering if there is any other reason for it to be negetively grounded. If the generator 'looks' exactly like the original, is there any chance its an alternator ? Thanks for any help.
