Locked up 'M' farmall

Picked up an orginal 1946 "M" a couple of months ago. It needed a little TLC. Brakes, carb major kit,ect. Transmission shifted smooth and was quiet. I was using 4th on a gravel drive and when I got to the pavement, I stopped and tried to go to 5th but everything locked up. Had to jack and slide the tractor up and on my trailer. I have a loose shifting lever and a locked up differential and transmission. Do I try to pull the shift lever and see if I can unlock it or just start cleaning off the transmittion case cover?
