Ok, after reading responses I am totally lost. I assumed that the coolant bypass was the crescent shaped hole in the front of the thermostat housing that routed up and around the t-stat.
Now I hear the small flexible hose between the pump and housing is the bypass. Isn't that hose there just to provide a circulation loop for the block when the stat isn't open? You can't circulate water through the block and avoid hot spots without a loop. Also, that hose connects in on the hot side of the stat not the cold side so it can't be a bypass can it?
Which is the bypass - the crescent hole or the small rubber hose?
