Hello All,
Been a while since I have posted here but I have some questions and looking for advice. I am helping my brother-in-law with his farmall 300. His brother was using it, I need to re-check what the was doing, but I think he was mowing with it. Well something happened and said it was making a terrible noise and the Independent pto quit and it sounded bad just to drive it. He said he pulled one of the covers and a bunch of teeth came out?
Well finally had time to look at for myself, for I had an idea where the problem was but I still don't know what caused it. We got it split apart the other night. we have the clutch t.a. hosing separate from the front and rear ends. The I.P.T.O. drive and shaft had about all the teeth sheared or ground off , as well as the driven gear that it meshes with. The upper bearings feel nice and smooth The lower driven gear and shaft is still in, I have find a big 8 or 12 point socket to get that big stupid pipe plug out, anyway it spins nice ever so slight front to rear of back and forth movement on shaft. I can grab the lower shaft on the front of the transmission and it spins snugish but not hard as I would kind of think it would. I did not engage the p.t.o. leaver though to see how it felt then.
I guess I am wondering before I just put new or good used parts it, have to find them first, what would have caused this why did it fail? I thought bearing failure but can see no failed bearings. The splines in the pressure plate and very very thin, it heeds a new pressure plate, and I would have thought that would have sheared those worn out splines. My only idea was if he hit something mowing and it happened to have a bad tooth, and that broken tooth led to more broken teeth? My brother-in-law said the oil was rather milky and had water in it, said he had to poke out some ice before the oil ran out. By the way this broke in mowing weather so ice is not the issue. I do not think that a real issue to failure as the T.A. still worked and the bearings still feel good.
Well any advise would be helpful, as I still don't know why they broke.

Today's Featured Article - Experimental Tractors Article - by Danny Bowes (Dsl). Tractor technology appears to have nearly hit it's pinnacle of development. If you agreed with the subtitle, you are rather mistaken. Quite, actually. As a matter of fact, some of the technology experimented with over 40 years ago makes today's tractor technology seem absolutely stale by comparison. Experimentation, from the most complex assembly to the most simple and mundane component, is as an integral a part of any farm tractor's development
