THe 9-speed is a different countershaft. Take the old countershaft out and put the new one in. The low side runs at original factory speeds, while the high side runs quite abit faster. On my H, it seems like first gear in overdrive is alittle faster than factory fourth gear! Also, the 9-speed doesn't affect fifth gear. One thing to remember is that if the 9-speed is on the high side, the belly pump and pto will run at least twice as fast. That would not be pretty if you used the belly pump at that time, but you can say your H or M has a 540 and 1000 pto! Dad remembers neighbors baling in fifth gear with the 9-speed making the pto turn faster, and the tractor was at little more than an idle!
