The problem with the early JD tractors: JD 5010,5020,4520,4620,4630, was that they had little torque at lower RPM. They needed some speed to have heir power. I had a JD 5020 for a few years. The only fertilizer spreaders around at that time where all 540 PTO. I had an adapter on it and would try to pull spreader at half throttle. Was a real gutless wonder at the lower RPMs
IH had/has a much better PTO setup with them stacked. I argued with John Deere company men for years telling them that having 1000 PTO on a tractor made it worth much less around here. The early John Deere 8000s where 1000 PTO only. Then they came out with the two speed PTO but you have to use that shear coupling to limit the horse Power. The you turn the electric PTO on too fast and break the shear coupling. Much fun!!!
