Your neighbor really saved some big money with cheap filters!!!!!! After he has his hydraulic system repaired he could have bought the OEM filters for his life time.
Years ago I too would by non OEM filters to "save" some money. Then I started to see some of the problems we would get in the shops I was working at from cheap/wrong filters.
I now use OEM filters in anything of value. If I wait an buy them during the preseason specials I can get them for just a little more than after market ones cost. This is JD, CIH and AGCO. I try to keep all three's common filters.
As to your friend. He is screwed. NAPA is not going to do a thing. It was the stores fault by not checking what they where doing more closely. I really doubt that they will cover a high dollar repair bill over a few oil filters.
