We went to church this morning. My wife was visiting with a few other Ladies after Sunday school. She over heard one of them talking about how tough money was for her right now. Her husband is a part time farmer and works in town at a local lumber yard. The problem is he is in the Air National Guard. He is currently at Riyadh Air Base in Saudi Arabia working in supply and support. This makes the third time he has been called up. The local lumber yard is good to him. They make up the difference between what he makes at the Air Guard and what his normal pay is. The problem is his farming operation. When he was called up his cousin runs his ground for him until he returns. The cousin is cash renting the ground. They do not have a written lease agreement. This year the cousin told her that he could not pay the rent until the fall harvest as he was too tight on money. What the he!!!! So she did not get the spring rent money she was counting on to make up the balance in income.
She asked my wife to have me come over this afternoon if I could. I went over right after lunch and the kids all left. She had a letter from her husband asking me if I would buy his JD 4040 tractor. I have told him if he ever wanted to sell it to call me. It is a factory open station with a quad range transmission. I always wanted one of these.
The price he asked was in the range the tractor is worth. The problem is that this just is not right!!!! He should not be worrying about this type of stuff while he is serving his country. I wrote her out a check for the whole amount and told her that the tractor could stay right where it was until after her husband gets home. I told her to tell him he can bring me the tractor or take some time and just pay me back. JUST the amount I gave her. I will NOT take a penny more.
I also told her that if she had any more trouble just to call or come on over to see me. I will not have her husband being treated this way!!!!
I told her to make sure and send a rent cancellation notice to the cousin in Sept. I told her my family would make sure that her husband's crops are planted in the future.
I am warring with myself on how to face down the scum ball cousin. I would love to just go kick his butt but that would not help the other family. I am leaning toward having my lawyer look into how we can get him kicked off the land sooner. I am willing to pay for the cost of the crop that is currently planted. You know seed fertilizer and fuel. Then let the soldier's family have any profit that is made this fall. I would think since he missed the rental payment that he is in breach of the rental agreement. Even though it was not written down there is a history of him paying the rent in the spring. Either way I will make his life miserable some how.

Today's Featured Article - Third Brush Generators - by Chris Pratt. While I love straightening sheet metal, cleaning, and painting old tractors, I use every excuse to avoid working on the on the electrics. I find the whole process sheer mystery. I have picked up and attempted to read every auto and farm electrics book with no improvement in the situation. They all seem to start with a chapter entitled "Theory of Electricity". After a few paragraphs I usually close the book and go back to banging out dents. A good friend and I were recently discussing our tractor electrical systems when he stated "I figure it all comes back to applying Ohms Law". At this point
