At home defense range either will be fine. If anyone is not comfortable with the recoil of a 12, get the 20.
You won"t recall the recoil if you"re in an actual self defense situation, but in order to be confident and competent with any gun you must PRACTICE, and that"s when recoil becomes an issue.
5+1 means the gun will hold a total of 6 rounds of ammo, 5 in the magazine and 1 in the chamber. Most come with a removable "duck plug" which limits total ammo to 3 in accordance with hunting laws in some (most?) states.
