Well that depends on where the torque peak is. On an old MF 35 with the Perkins 3 cyl I had (and loved) it peaked at 1000 with PTO up around 1800 and that thing just loved to be tested. My current Cummins is rated at 2600 but torque peaks at 1600 so I just ensure that what I'm doing is above that rpm and doesn't drop more than 200 under load.
My Chevy gas truck is rated at around 4000 rpm for the torque peak but at 70 mph the engine is rolling less than 1500. Diesel trucks are peaked much lower as you obviously know. I think that's what makes the difference besides fuel economy.
The Cummins B 3.3 NA in my '07 Branson is much better on fuel (.046 gal/hp/hr) than my JD 4010 which are about the same rated HP indicating the improvements in diesels is keeping up with the improvements in gas engines you mention.
Don't have the JD spec but just from farming the same area with the two different tractors, besides the increased performance the 4wd on the new one provides (pulling a larger implement at the same speed)....... the 4 wd another amenity that is almost universal on small tractors......20-30 hp range; around here anyway.
My uneducated 2c is that most of the world runs on diesel and as such OEM tractor mfgrs., especially since a lot of/most tractors are built overseas will continue to be diesel not counting the improvements on gas engines.
