I have some land nearby that I can rent for 1 year, possibly longer but no promises beyond 1 year at this point. I give it 50/50 odds of being a longer lease. I don't have a soil test for the ground, and at this point I may not get one ordered. The previous farmer of this ground was a fly by night farmer, used no fertilizer at all, doesn't know what lime is, etc. Assume this is only marginal ground. Not much for rock so that helps, but not much for fertility either. I am thinking about putting corn or soybeans into it and would like to fertilize it so that I can get a decent crop. Now without a soil sample, what fertilizers would you put down to help the crop? keep in mind, I may not farm this piece in the future, so I don't want any fertilizer left in the ground after the first year either. Is this possible??
Some assumptions....
Say the ground is low ph Drainage is fair to decent location to home is good 20 acres field size grass hay was previous crop, but field was fallowed for the last year land can be rented for $60/acre where good ground rents for $100/acre good ground around here produces 35/bu beans and 130-150 bu corn
If I can get a longer lease, I would be all for soil testing and then putting $$ into fertilizing the piece, however with a short term lease, I want to be very careful what I put into this piece so that I don't get burned financially on it. However if I can squeeze a buck out of it on a short term lease, I'm willing to give it a shot.

I was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. Not a place one would associate with farms or farm machinery. I credit my parents for instilling a lot of good values, a respect for learning, a knowledge of various skills and a little knowledge of farming in me, amo
