"My dealer (15 miles away, one of 16 in a super group) has a desire to increase internet orders."
I think you just stumbled on to one of the problems. This links in good with the post the other day about self checkouts at stores. Thing is,those large retailers left in the checkouts where a real person will still check you out and make change when you pay them. There's still a generation of us who'll use useful technology when we can see the benefits, but who won't have it forced on us if we don't want it. I'm sure the "tech" generation wants a system where they can order from their smart phone then wait for delivery,or go to the dealer and enter a code or something then get their part through a window with no human interaction whatsoever. Then there are those of us who still see a trip to the store, dealer, whatever,as a social event. We remember going and talking to the neighbors who were in there, having one parts guy finding the parts while we socialized with the other one. The owner coming out and ribbing us about how we really needed that new piece of equipment sitting out there. Trouble is,these dealers need to spend a generation phasing out a generation of farmers, not forcing us in to something we don't want. If these stores were single location, managed by the owner who was right there every day overseeing things, they would have the sense not to change things too quickly, but they have young managers who've probably studied "business management",who try to take out the human equation and cause nothing but hard feelings with old customers. So,we go to where we still feel welcome, plain as that. I guess there's a younger generation who'll never understand that. When they get all of us old coots in our graves, they'll have their business the way they want it without any complaints.

I was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. Not a place one would associate with farms or farm machinery. I credit my parents for instilling a lot of good values, a respect for learning, a knowledge of various skills and a little knowledge of farming in me, amo
