Smokin' Diesel

I now have the first diesel engine I have ever owned. It smokes a bit, but it doesn't seem to use oil. Question: Could the smoke be from poor injectors and not worn rings as in a gasoline engine? I would like to rebuild this engine one day, but if I can get away with just putting in new injectors for now I would do it. Need some advice and info. Thanks.
