This tractor is renewing my memories of why I sold the last JD new generation gas tractor I owned. LOL

It has a Delco Distributor. When I started trying to figure out why I was having trouble making this tractor run I replaced the cap and rotor button. The old one was badly burnt.

Well tonight I finally dug out my OLD ignition analyzer. You can check the voltage output of the coil and then what voltages your getting through out the system. It uses an induction type clamp to "read" the voltage in the coil and spark plug wires.

Well I was getting 12-13 KV at the coil wire. Then when checking right at the distributor I was only getting 5-6 KV at the spark plug wires. So I am losing basically half the voltage through the distributor. So I took the cap and rotor off. The cap center contact post is completely burn out. Recessed maybe 1/4 of an inch up into the cap. The top tang on the rotor button is just about worn through from rubbing on the cap. What the heck!!!!!! This cap and rotor has less than 5 hours use. They are OEM Delco parts not some import.

I also think part of the issue is the dust cover ( Item #5) that would cover the points and act as a seal under the cap is gone. This would also make the rotor push harder against the cap. This cover has some thickness to it. IRC it is around 1/8 to 3/16 thick. So with this gone the cab would set lower in relation to the top of the distributor shaft. I think???? I am not sure if this is an issue or not. Also I am not sure if the cover will fit on over the solid state igniter??? The cover is not available from JD but I did find the Delco number 1960325. There is some of them available on line. I am also going to check my local parts store.

So have any of you tried to use the cover with the electronic ignition kit??? I think the outer half/ring needs to be there to make the cap seal better on the distributor. The point plate was pretty rusty on this distributor. I cleaned it up when I installed the new cap and rotor.

I have been a collector of Farmall tractors since 1990 when I first obtained part of the family farm in Eastern Indiana. My current collection includes a 1938 F20, 1945 H, 1946 H, and the recently purchased 1951 H. This article will focus on what I encountered and what I did to bring the 1951 NEAR DEATH Farmall H back to life. ... [Read Article]
