The white ceramic thing is the ballast resistor. It sounds like it was installed incorrectly (one side of the ammeter should go to the screw terminal on the alternator, the other side should go directly to the battery). The fact that it was present argues that you have the OEM coil which needs the ballast resistor to survive at 12v. You may now have a bad coil and/or points. The ballast resistor should be installed between the ignition switch and the coil.
