Ashamed to use my regular identity for this one. In 1979, I built a tandem trailer with Dexter axles. The axle sits on top of the spring and U-bolts go around the axle and down through a plate below the spring. Nuts on the bolts from below hold the plate up tight and the nuts bear the weight of the trailer and load. Getting ready to haul one of the biggest loads in quite a while, I checked over the trailer and found the nuts below the springs severely rusted- 2 of the nuts were essentially gone. Have been replacing the U-bolts and nuts today. Using stainless steel nuts and putting 2 of them on each leg of the U-bolt. The guy at the trailer place seemed not surprised that I found this rusty mess. Fellows, please for your self and the motorists that you meet on the road, check over your trailer carefully. I am so glaad that I did not have problems on the road.
