Ugh, I'm as clueless as they come. I have a horse property and am looking to buy a used tractor that I can use for ripping and disking the riding arena and keeping that maintained (it's not been worked yet at all, just built, ground hard). And for maybe moving gravel to keep the driveway up, making post holes, pulling posts, mowing (not haying), etc. etc. The only experience I have with tractors at all was with a 1953 Ford, years ago. The deer in the headlights look would be how the salesmen would describe me. And most tell me everything they have in every make and model would work - so that doesn't help me learn and distinguish things. I don't know where to research my HP needs and whatever else I need to keep in mind for the duties this tractor would be doing. I've found quite a few in different makes and models but up close I've only had a chance to drive a Ford 3910 no leaks, with a front end loader that seemed good and stout and strong (he wants $10,500). And a Ford 1715 4WD ($12,500 - seems too high) which was sure nice to drive with the power steering but the tractor "felt" light (if that makes sense) and I wondered about it's ripping and work capabilities. I'm not opposed to looking at different makes, my biggest concern is I just don't entirely know what kind of power I should be looking for with regards to what I'll be doing with it. This is something that will be used a few times a week and possibly in a handy man business for other acreages - doing the same thing, mowing, postholes, ripping, leveling, etc. Size-wise I'd like to say at most with something the size of the 3910 since I'm planning on putting it on a trailer and using it for other people as well. At this time I know I'll be getting something with a front loader, and I'm also planning on buying a ripper, leveler box, disk, mower and auger with it. So help you can give me to teach a novice tractor buyer what to look for and especially what HP, etc. I'll need for the various implements would be appreciated. (and what's the deal with the weights...where do they go?? - and how do you know whether you need them or not?)

Listening to Your Tractor - by Curtis Von Fange. Years ago there was a TV show about a talking car. Unless you are from another planet, physically or otherwise, I don’t think our internal combustion buddies will talk and tell us their problems. But, on the other hand, there is a secret language that our mechanical companions readily do speak. It is an interesting form of communication that involves all the senses of the listener. In this series we are going to investigate and learn the basic rudimentary skills of understanding this lingo.
