We use primarily perennial clovers (medium red) or ladino (white). Medium red lasts about 2 years in central KY. I have been very sucessful in reducing N yields but red clover is considered very undesirable for horse hay. My horse market hay is all fertilized. I use 200# of ammonium nitrate per acre (cost $170/ton, January advance pay) which is very competitive with any kind of seeding, plus P and K to keep levels in medium-. Look at your sources and costs, it pays to prepay, even last year I only paid $195/ ton on a January order yet I saw some people pay $300 per ton in April. Animal manure is another option but year in and year out I'm money ahead to buy nitrate, it's cheap, clean, and effective.
