I've got a skidder a guy wants me to fix, and I thought maybe somebody here had done one of these and knows an easy way.. The brackets on the front frame that the steering ram ends engage have worn their holes enough there is substantial play in the steering. The brackets are about 5/8 steel and the holes are 1.75 inches or so. If the pins didnt have to go thru Heim joints on the pistons I'd just make some oversize pins, but we can't do that. Should I: 1: build up the hole with weld and grind by hand to approximately the correct diameter?
2: Slit the bracket, heat it up with a rosebud, and weld it back together after hammerring it smaller around the old pin? (With appropriate V'ing of course..)
3: Make mild steel bushings on my lathe to fit the pins, about 3/8 thick, torch the old pin holes out and weld the bushings in with appropriate v'ing and cleaning?
Or is there another way? If it was the rear holes it'd be a lot easier, as they are right out in the open. Unfortunately the front holes are buried beneath the floorboard and one can only get a right angle die grinder to them due to interference of the floor.
I'm a halfway decent welder, and can use either MIg or arc for this job. Thanks for any help! Bill

This article will focus on what I encountered and what I did to bring the 1951 NEAR DEATH Farmall H back to life.
