How much should a diesel smoke?

I have a 1986 MF250 diesel with about 2400 hours on it. Not being very familiar with diesel tractors, I wondered if its characteristics are normal. It smokes like a freight train when you first crank it. It will run you out of the barn for about 5 minutes or so until it warms up some and then the smoke diminishes. Once fully warmed up, I don't notice much smoke. Since it has the exhaust pipe under the belly, it will choke you trying to hitch up anything to the 3 pt hitch. Lastly, it has never seemed to have adequate power - either that, or it is too high geared. The engine lugs down and doesn't seem to run smoothly when you shift into any gear in high range - even with no load. Could this be related? Is there anything I can check or adjust on the injection pump? I appreciate any advice.
