All diesels will smoke more when they are cold. A diesel engine relies on the heat of compressed air to igninte the fuel when it is injected. When your engine is cold and all parts on the engine are cold, the air does not heat up as high as if it were a hot engine. This way, not all of the fuel will ignite, hence the smoke. As far as the power, I am not familiar with the MF250, but I would make sure that the fuel and air filters are clean. If the fuel filter is restricted, the engine may run fine at an idle, but when a load is put on, or the engine is just run faster, it may seem to lug down because it is acutally not getting all of the fuel it needs to run it to a higher rpm. Also, if you get a greyish white smoke at an idle, or really any rpm without load, an injector may not be closing or atomizing the fuel properly. You would have to pull the injectors and put them on a test stand to see that they atomize properly and close all the way. Good luck.
