I've often found mileage reports of a person's own pet vehicle as optimistic.
Parking the vehicle nose high then nose low and filling at pumps with different auto nozzle shut off limits. Some people even calculate fuel usage right off the fuel gauge than a calibrated pump meter. Rounding off numbers can be generous as well.
For all we drive, trade intervals and pulling, a diesel would cost us money. The trucks own computer shows an average of 39 mph and 13mpg over the entire past year. Not bad for a 300HP 366 in a 1500HD crewcab 4x4 carrying extra accessory weight and towing. Diesel option is approx $10,000 plus lost or paid interest if borrowing.
That said if I drove 40,000+ miles per year or towed a trailer 100+ miles per week a stove oil burner would pay.
Have to laugh at the guys at work who claim their new diesel saves then so much $$$.Primary usage is just a round trip to work every day of 20 miles. Costs then extra over a gas every day but they can't/won't see it. Big ego with a couple of them having a diesel.
