I own a 2001 K-3500 Chevy. It is equipped with the 8.1, 6 spd manual trans., and 4.11 rear gears. I now have 28,000 miles on it, the only trouble it ever gave was when the crank sensor failed, and the truck would not start. That was fixed under warranty, no more problems. This truck pulls like no other I ever owned, didn't complain one little bit when I hauled an 8,000# tractor through the mountains west of Denver, Co. Fuel mileage is not great, but is not bad either, around 12 to 14 normal driving, sometimes better. The worst it ever did was around 8 mpg, on the trip through the mountains. I am sure that the fuel mileage would be much better with the 3.73 rear gears. Go for the 8.1, the diesels are way overpriced.
