OT - Bad Battery?

My 94 K Blazer didn't want to start today. I jumped it and it started right up. I noticed then that the alternator was only pushing about 12-13 volts according to the dash gage. I looked at the battery and it was several years old. I replaced it. Now the gage shows 14 volts - straight up like it did before. Could this be caused by the battery being old - acting as a drain? Or should I look for another cause? Is the new battery just masking a problem that will reappear? Thanx, Irv
