I tend to agree with your mechanic on Penzoil. While it is true that all major brands meet the SAE ad API specs, some are naturally better than others. I have taken a lot of engines apart and if they are maintained as they should be then Penzoil is fine. What I have found is that neglected engines that run Penzoil are terribly dirty on the inside. A lot more that other oils. It has been a long time since my Fuels and Lube class in college but I remember seeing a report on oils ranked in order and Penzoil was the last entry on the report. Again, it met all the requirements but my feeling is that I can spend that $$$ on another brand of oil that ranks better for the same money. Just my opinion.
