The Steiger has 225 engine hp and the 8640 has 275 engine hp. The 8640 is a good machine but when you have to work on them the repair bills are huge. The Steiger is cheaper to work on and for the most part more reliable then the JD's of that era. I do know of some JD 30/40/50 series that have made 8,000 hrs with no problems. But it seems like for every one you find that was good, there were five that needed worked at 4,000 hrs. I would feel more comfortable buying a Steiger with 8,000 hrs then a JD with 5,000 hrs. The JD has better hydraulics. Also, I think the price on the Steiger is a little high. If you can get the seller of the Steiger to come down a little I would buy it providing they are both in equal condition.
