I can tell you from experience that even a bigger dog doesn't work. I live through the woods from my Dad and have two dogs, both around 50 lbs. At Dads we have about 10 or so "shop cats" that keep the mice, snakes, lizards, etc all under control. The cats will run on occasion, but their just as inclined to turn around on the dogs and chase them. The other day my male Roscoe went in the door of the shop and cornered one of the long time resident cats. She politely bowed up at him, hissed, and then jumped on his head and went right on over his back, leaving him standing there looking at an empty corner with a "what the he-- just happened" look on his face. I do know that the pepper trick always workes with my dogs when they get it in their head to chew on something. A little bit of pepper on their favorite chew spot and they don't go back. Maybe it'll work with the cats getting it on their feet.
