Gravely hi/low shifter not engaging

I have a gravely 2 wheel tractor model 5260 (1984 model). The tractor has not been put into low range since it was new. I cannot get the pin on the axel to travel enough to the right to engage the low range. I have been told that it needs to be cleaned internally. Is this true? Is it something I can do myself? I have pretty good mechanical ability but have never had one of these apart. I've also been told that something may spring apart during disassembly and I won't be able to get it back together without gravely experience.
Any tips?
