You might check with the IH crowd. Seems like in the early 70's IH used a hydrostatic transmission in a fairly good sized tractor. The trouble with HST's is that they are not very efficient even compared to most single-stage torque converters. At the least, that means adequate cooling if you're going to transmit serious horsepower through them any length of time. On the other hand, feller bunchers such as Barko and Hydro-Ax use HST's in their main drivelines for exactly the reason you suggest, easy back and forth. Other, similar carriers were built by Pettibone with dual HST's, one for main drive and one for implement work. Typically these were a very large rotary mower deal used for clearing powerline right of ways. Riding mower with an attitude. As far as using the same pressure compensated pump to run the steering and the reverser, be sure either that the system pressure doesn't drop enough from the main load that the steering suffers.
