I've Been Pondering Again

I'd like to put a salt/grit spreader in the back of the dump truck at work to aid the snow plow. I might have access to a very cheap fertilizer spreader box minus the running gear. Do those spreaders run off of PTO or hydraulics or both? The dump truck has a hyd. pump I could plumb into, but do you think it would have enough power to power a fert. spreader? It would only have to spread about 10 ft. wide. I'm thinking ag lime would be the cheapest stuff to spread on the roads, but I'm worried about it freeezing into a block and not being spreadable. Any ideas? I'm open to just about anything as long as it's cheap. Thank you much.
